Steve Mitchell's portraiture is incredible & he truly captures the character & spirit of his sitters. He also gets them "right." They look like the subject without being photo-realistic. His details enhance his subject. So instead of being a painting of a photograph, they have personality and depth that make them recognizable as his work. Portraiture & landscape are equally important to me, but I find landscaping more relaxing & less threatening. I think there are more expectations when you begin a portrait & that becomes threatening. It has to "look" like the subject & be recognizable to your audience, it has to meet their expectations, too. The onlooker expects a certain level of precision as well as interpretation. Automatically you're constrained by that, even if you try not to be. In landscape you don't have the preconceived image to fight, the expectations of portraiture, you don't have the same freedom.

Square and then, portrait. I find the Landscape format intimidating and without a wide vista, I feel it's less versatile.

Thanks so much for sharing your work! And your improvement over time and hard work! I am a hobbyist artist and I immediately started practicing my drawing while watching this interview! I have a long, long way to go. I am learning to draw, do watercolor, acrylics and many other mediums such as gouache, oils and oil pastels and colored pencils and neocolor IIs, etc. So, your input was invaluable. Thanks again! Really appreciated your input about how important it is to take classes to improve your skills and to practice, practice, practice and repeat projects to improve as well. I often repeat painting projects and wondered if I was wasting paint, but now I understand it is important in the process of learning and improving. Yay!

Just recently had a knee replacement surgery and didn't feel like spinning, which is my go-to art. I stumbled across some watercolors I purchased over 40 years ago, have been carrying around, and never used. This is my second painting now during the past week. Jun-Pierre, you have such an easy and straightforward teaching manner! I so enjoyed this video, and my results weren't too bad for a neophyte!
